An Icon of Liberalism

Home to one of America’s icons – the Golden Gate Bridge – San Francisco is a liberal city where life is very much for the living.

Surrounded by water on 3 sides, the city's spread over steep hills that make for great photo ops. And none better than the zig-zag Lombard Street, seen in many a film. Even more famous are San Fran's iconic trolleys climbing the hills – a little touristy, but still worth a ride.

In the middle of the bay, Alcatraz island is known for the notorious criminals once imprisoned there. Even if you don’t go inside, the views of the bridge and city are unparalleled.

Nowhere is life in San Francisco more laid-back than on the Pacific beaches. Rent a bike and head out there, passing through the huge Golden Gate Park, before returning to sample some fresh seafood at Fisherman’s Wharf. Don't miss the clam chowder served in bread bowls! Chinatown also has a great selection of mid-range restaurants.

As you fly into San Francisco Airport, look out for the exclusive homes lining the Bay Area. Whether you want a more independent stay in apartments, luxury San Francisco hotels or cheap hostels, Sydney Tourism has something for everyone. Be careful though – you might just leave your heart here!

8 Nice place to visit once, maybe twice....
Nice place to visit once, maybe twice.... Three times is too much.... Ghirardelli square is nice but overated... Their chocolates and ice cram are good, but not the best ones (even in San Francisco and in walking distance from them you find better ice cream...). Alcatraz and Golden Gate is a must see and Fisherman's Wharf / Pier 39 is a good place to walk and eat at decent price. If you have the opportunity, go see a basketball / baseball / football game. There are some interesting neighborhoods to see, but not mandatory.... Napa Valley is much more interesting and has more nature spots to see and visit....

It's a world class city because of its location and setting as well as it's rich cultural heritage. Despite it having challenges in terms of high housing costs and many people living in the streets, the city is worth visiting.

2 A beautiful city that is no longer safe for tourists.
A beautiful city that is no longer safe for tourists. Crime is out of control, the bums are on every corner alley and Main Street. The Wharf are was a disgrace at 8am. Sleeping and deficating in the hallways and on the sidewalks that other humans have to use to enter the restaurants and shops. The authorities have blinders on, and there is no police action

We walked most places we went because the hotel is located so close to the Fisherman's Wharf area. We used the 'Hop On-Hop Off' bus, which was a good alternative to taking a cab to places farther away. I would not have wanted to be driving a rental around the city-too big and busy for someone who doesn't know the city. We ate breakfast at the hotel's fabulous breakfast buffet, then got lunch or dinner at the Wharf area-lots of choices.

8 Enjoyed the trams and buses.
Enjoyed the trams and buses. Walking can be challenging because of the hills. Loved fisherman's wharf, Alcatraz and the boat trip to it. Only poor meal was in Chinatown, undercooked duck. The BIGBus tour was very worthwhile, reasonably priced and included the Golden Gate Park and Bridge. Avoid the bridge on cold, misty days as you might be very cold on top of the bus and also, might not see much of the bridge or anything else from the bridge. Pick a warm day. Plenty of gluten free options but food is pricey and expected tips make it very expensive. Go to Macy's Cheesecake Factory and sit at the bar for coffee and amazing cheesecake.

10 San Francisco is my favorite city.
San Francisco is my favorite city. And I have been to London, Paris Rome, and - Walnut Creek ! I am proud to be a native to the Bay Area, and I have always been in awe of San Francisco. It has changed a lot during my lifetime, but that is the way things go. There is still enough of the things that endure that I enjoy, to keep me returning. I love the restaurants and museums. Also, Golden Gate Park is magical. I come into the city about 2-3 times a month, - currently. If I need a place to spend the night, I will stay at the Seascape Inn.
